Arsenal academy chief Per Mertesacker has heaped praise onto Dayot Upamecano, amid speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.

Upamecano has impressed for Red Bull Leipzig this season and will line up at the heart of the Bundesliga side’s defence against Paris Saint-Germain in their semi-final clash on Tuesday night.

Their impressive run in Europe’s premier competition has made the world’s biggest clubs sit up and take note, with Manchester United and Arsenal both linked with a potential summer swoop for the 21-year-old.

Mertesacker, the former Arsenal centre-half who now runs the club’s academy, has been impressed by the manner in which he’s conducted himself.

And he expects interest to only grow for ‘one of the most exciting central defenders the world has to offer right now’.

‘I was very excited about the Atletico game,’ he told Goal and Dazn.

‘He showed so much and did it right: the courage of a Lucio who just goes forward, but also my solid game of simply finding the right man or withdrawing.

‘If he continues like this, works on himself and remains consistent, he will generate more interest.

‘He’s definitely one of the most exciting central defenders the world has to offer right now.

‘RB certainly made the contract extension very tasty for him. It’s exciting to see where his path is going.’
