New Arsenal signing Willian says team-mate Gabriel Martinelli has the potential to go on and become one of the best players in the Premier League.

The Brazilian was a revelation in his debut season for the Gunners, scoring 10 goals in 26 games, and was rewarded with a new long-term deal last month.

Martinelli suffered a serious knee injury in June and was sidelined for Arsenal’s remaining games of the season, with the 19-year-old not expected to return to training until the end of the year.

His compatriot and new Gunners signing Willian has already seen enough to predict a bright future for the young winger.

‘He has a great future I think,’ Willian told the club’s official website. ‘He can be one of the best players in the Premier League, no doubt.

‘It’s because of his quality and also without the ball you can see that he is always trying to help his team and do the job without the ball.

‘So I think he can be one of the best players.

‘I think when he starts to play again, I know he is injured now, but when he starts again, it’s about time for him to go to the Brazilian national team.’

Willian himself has 70 caps for his country Brazil and a back catalogue of multiple major honours over his career.

During his seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge, the 32-year-old won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the Europa League and will bring some invaluable experience to Mikel Arteta’s side.
