There were ‘two major offers’ made to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal this summer, but the club managed to convince their captain to stay put and sign a new contract at the Emirates.

The 31-year-old finally put pen to paper on a new three-year contract at Arsenal on Tuesday afternoon after entering into the final 12 months of his previous deal.

Sky Sports report that the Gabonese forward had ‘two major offers from ‘big clubs’ to leave this summer, although did not confirm which two clubs made the bids.

Aubameyang took his tally to 55 Premier League goals in just 86 games for Arsenal on the opening day of the season against Fulham, confirming once again how important he is to the side.

Manager Mikel Arteta has helped convince him that his future is in north London and his stay will now last until 2023 at least.

‘I’m so happy a bit nervous so many people here. people were asking me to sign da ting and it’s finally done,’ said Aubameyang.

‘I’m so happy to stay here this is my home. As you know, i’m so happy here. It’s a great day. I hope you enjoy your day.

‘I signed da ting because I wanted to become an Arsenal legend and leave a legacy. It’s the time to work a lot to become a legend, but for sure I will work hard and give my best.’

With 72 goals in 111 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, the former Dortmund man is well on his way to achieving his goal, especially after firing them to the FA Cup last season.

Arteta added: ‘It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us. He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality. Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.

‘He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.’
