Arsenal legend Ian Wright has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign Donny van de Beek and feels he would have been better suited to a club such as the Gunners.

United have endured a difficult transfer window, failing to land top target Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, with their only new arrival coming in the form of £35million recruit Van de Beek from Ajax.

The move did draw some puzzled looks, however, with the versatile Dutchman preferring to play an attacking, box-to-box role in midfield – taking up positions already occupied by Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

Wright feels United have much more pressing needs to strengthen other areas of the team and is worried Van de Beek does not quite fit into the starting XI, instead believing he would have been perfect elsewhere.

Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken,’ said the former Gunners striker on The Kelly & Wrighty Show.

‘When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

‘So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

‘Because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

‘So again, spend the money, yeah he’s a great player and yes take him, but you’ve still got to look for the players that you know are going to improve your team.’

He added: ‘Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United in time because he’s a quality player. But is he what they need right now?’

Fellow pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards agreed, chiming in: ‘Van de Beek, for me, was a panic buy. He’s got good ability, I’ve watched loads of clips of him, and he is a good player, but…’
