Mesut Ozil has told Mikel Arteta he is ‘fit and ready’ ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Fulham on Saturday.

Ozil hasn’t featured for the Gunners since their defeat at home to Olympiacos in the Europa league in February and didn’t play a single minute after the season restarted in June.

Arsenal have been keen to offload Ozil this summer but the midfielder’s £350,000-a-week salary has proved too problematic.

Arteta is now resigned to keeping Ozil until his contract expires next summer, although how heavily the 31-year-old features in the Spaniard’s plans remains to be seen.

But ahead of Arsenal’s first Premier League fixture of the new season, Ozil has sent a clear message to Arteta about his availability.

When asked in a Q&A on Twitter if he is fit to face Fulham this Saturday, Ozil replied: ‘I’m fit and ready and doing my best.

‘Unfortunately it’s not in my hands to decide about the squad on the weekend. We will see.’

Meanwhile, Arteta is facing a defensive dilemma ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Craven Cottage as David Luiz is struggling with a neck injury.

The Brazilian could be sidelined for up to six weeks with the injury.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are both in contention to make their debuts, although the Brazilian has not played a competitive game since March.

Arteta has also allowed Matteo Guendouzi to return to training following his exile last season.

The 21-year-old midfielder took part in Wednesday’s training session with the rest of the first-team squad.
