Nigel Winterburn warns Arsenal they should only sell Emiliano Martinez on one condition

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn says the club must receive an offer ‘in excess of £20-25 million’ for Emiliano Martinez to justify selling the goalkeeper this summer.

After over a decade at the club, struggling to break into the first team and being shipped out on six different loan spells, the 28-year-old finally got his first real opportunity last season when deputising for the injured Bernd Leno.

The Argentine produced a series of outstanding displays and stated a strong case to be Arsenal’s No.1.

However, Martinez has admitted that if he is reduced to a role on the bench again, he will be looking for a new club.

Aston Villa are one of the interested parties that can offer the stopper a starting berth, with Tom Heaton out injured for the start of the season.

Reports claim that the Gunners have decided to move Martinez on, with Aston Villa lining up a fresh bid after agreeing personal terms with the shot-stopper.

The north London club are holding out for an offer of £20m before next month’s deadline.

Arsenal legend Winterburn believes that accepting a low-ball offer for Martinez would be a ‘ridiculous’ decision, and admits an adequate fee would be above £20-25m.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I saw a fee of £12 million mentioned and I’m telling you now if they let a goalkeeper go for £12m it’s absolutely ridiculous because they won’t be able to replace him for £12m.

‘Look at the fees for some of the goalkeepers that have been floated around lately. I’m not saying he’s in that league yet but his performances have been so strong that £12m, I wouldn’t even consider that.

‘It’s got to be well in excess of £20-25m, goalkeepers are hard to find. If you let one of them go and then pick up an injury, who’s your goalkeeper that’s going to come in? I just don’t see Arsenal letting one of those goalkeepers go.’

Winterburn doesn’t have any problems with having two top-class ‘keepers at the club, but insists that Martinez should hold onto his starting berth.

‘I’m loving it because it means we’ve got competition for places,’ he added. ‘One of them is going to be a little unhappy because he’s sitting on the subs bench.

‘Martinez has come in and done terrifically well, he’s been absolutely outstanding. But that was the same with Bernd Leno, I thought he did a fantastic job before his injury. Yeah he made the odd mistake, but you can expect that from goalkeepers because they’re so exposed at times.

‘Both goalkeepers are so evenly matched at the moment that you put the goalkeeper in that’s been in commanding form.

‘It might be slightly controversial, but at the moment I’d go with Martinez, and Bernd Leno’s going to have to wait for his opportunity, whether its a lack of form from Martinez to get back into the team. I think he deserves to carry on.’
