William Saliba says he’s ‘very excited’ to join forces with Gabriel in Arsenal’s defence this season but admits they have a lot to ‘learn’ from more experienced players like David Luiz.

There are huge expectations on both Saliba and Gabriel ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, given the two young centre-backs arrive with such stellar reputations from Ligue 1 football.

Arsenal captured Saliba from Saint-Etienne 12 months ago but the 19-year-old was immediately loaned back to the French club meaning he is yet to play a competitive match for the Gunners.

Gabriel, meanwhile, arrived in north London at the start of the month after Arsenal agreed a £27 million deal with Lille for his signature and the pair trained together for the first time this week.

‘I’ve already played against him in France and I have a friend who knows him,’ Saliba told BT Sport when asked about new Arsenal team-mate Gabriel.

‘I’ve spoken to him since he’s come here and I’m very excited.

‘We are young so we have to learn from defenders like David Luiz and the others.’

Saliba says it’s a dream come true to represent Arsenal after idolising club legend Thierry Henry as a youngster.

‘It’s a dream to join Arsenal because it’s a very big club,’ the teenager explained.

‘When I was little I bought an Arsenal jersey with Thierry Henry on the back.

‘Some years after, I’m wearing the Arsenal jersey and I’m so proud.’

Saliba added: ‘I’m very, very excited.

‘It’s the next step for me because I was in France, now in England, the best league in the world.

‘I’m very excited to play for Arsenal.’

Gabriel is confident Saliba has all the necessary qualities to become a key player for the Gunners over the coming years.

‘I know Saliba is a talented young player and if he is joining Arsenal it is because of his quality,’ the Brazilian told Arsenal’s official website earlier this month.

‘We have a few friends in common and I did play against him before.

‘He is a great player and I am sure we will get along very well.’

Like Saliba, Gabriel is relishing the chance to play alongside Luiz in Arsenal’s defence.

‘For sure David is an example, he is a player I admire very much,’ he added.

‘I was always a big fan of him and everything he achieved.

‘I watched him since I was a kid, I played video games with his character and today it is a dream come true to be here with him and hopefully play next to him soon.’
