Mikel Arteta has teased the possibility of Thomas Partey making his full debut for Arsenal in Thursday’s Europa League group stage clash against Rapid Vienna.

The deadline day signing from Atletico Madrid got his first taste of action at the weekend against Manchester City, coming on in the 83rd minute as the Gunners lost 1-0 at the Etihad.

After being away on international duty with Ghana, Partey was afforded precious little time to integrate with his new teammates before the trip to face City.

But he has been involved in more training sessions since then and Arteta feels the Ghanaian is now up to speed and ready to be handed his first start for the club.

Asked how Partey has reacted since his appearance against City, Arteta said: ‘He has reacted really well.

‘I think he came on and looked strong, looked confident and he added something positive to the team.

‘It was a very short turnaround from him. Since he joined he had a day, a day and a half only in training.

‘He has done a few more training sessions and he looks ready to start.’

Arteta was more coy on the prospect of Runar Alex Runarsson starting, saying he would not be revealing his line-up before the match, while he is confident Arsenal’s squad is strong enough to compete on multiple fronts.

Asked about the strength of his squad, the Spaniard said: ‘Time will tell. Depending what happens, depending on how this COVID situation evolves, depending on the injuries, I believe we have the squad to try and fit until the last moment at the end.

‘What we are looking for in this competition is to go as far as possible and win it.’
