Fred said he was delighted to receive such special praise from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Manchester United manager hailed his ‘unbelievable’ performance in the side’s thumping 5-0 win over Leipzig.

The 27-year-old midfielder returned to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team following the Red Devils’ miserable 6-1 defeat to Tottenham and has started their last four matches in all competitions.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench and stole the headlines with incredible 18-minute hat-trick in Wednesday’s one-sided Champions League clash and the forward was heralded for his sublime cameo display against Leipzig, who were unbeaten prior to the game.

However, Solskjaer argued after United’s victory that Rashford could not have made the impact he did without players such as Fred laying the groundwork with his tireless energy in the middle of the park.

‘I’m sure Fred covered every little single blade of grass on that pitch,’ the Norwegian said.

‘It’s unbelievable how that boy just recovers for the next game.’

Asked about Solksjaer’s kind comments, a flattered Fred told Esporte Interativo: ‘I’m very happy about that and happy that I’m important to the team.

‘It’s very important that the coach is praising me.

‘We’ve had a great run of games. A difficult sequence and a great sequence and, fortunately, I’ve been playing all these games.

‘Today I missed some passes there in the middle, I know I can improve a lot, but I’m happy to be a key members of the team, to give the blood on the pitch, to run as fast as possible. Helping the team, that’s important.’

There’s no let-up for United, who play host Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend, and Fred is anticipating a ‘difficult’ match at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian added: ‘And the other important thing is that we didn’t concede a goal today.

‘One more clean sheet, so this is important for us, two games and two clean sheets, so we have to continue in this manner.

‘We have to think about the next game against Arsenal. A very difficult game.

‘So we have to rest and prepare for the next game.’

Fred believes Rashford deserves all the praise that has come his way for his work both on and off the pitch in recent weeks.

‘Man, very happy for him,’ he said.

‘First because he’s doing what he’s doing off the pitch. Everyone is following it.

‘This is an extraordinary job and he’s been doing a great job on the pitch too.

‘Today he came in and did a hat-trick. This is important to us, important to the group, important to him.

‘So we’re very happy for him, for everything he’s been doing.

‘I hope he grows more and more as a person and as a player too.’
