Ian Wright has praised Timo Werner and says he was ‘not worried’ about the Chelsea summer signing’s lack of goals before he scored twice in a thrilling draw with Southampton.

Germany striker Werner, who joined Premier League club Chelsea in July from RB Leipzig, scored only once in his first five appearances for the Blues.

The 24-year-old produced his best Chelsea performance to date on Saturday, however, scoring twice as Frank Lampard’s side drew 3-3 with the Saints.

Arsenal legend Wright was impressed by Werner’s performance and says Chelsea are going to cause their Premier League rivals plenty of ‘problems’ once the team fully clicks.

Asked whether Werner’s goals against Southampton will be his first of many for Chelsea, Wright told Match of the Day: ‘Yeah, I think so.

‘When you look at the way he’s played, he didn’t look too worried about not scoring.

‘It’s the movement and the runs he’s making. You look at Werner, Mount and Havertz… something is happening between them.

‘Once Chelsea can get it all going, I think they’re going to cause problems. I wasn’t worried about him [Werner] not getting goals.

‘Once they get it going, they will be a real problem. They need to cut out the mistakes because going forward they look really dangerous.’

Werner’s first-half brace saw Chelsea take control of their Premier League clash against Southampton but Danny Ings reduced the deficit before half-time.

Che Adams then took advantage of a mix-up between Kurt Zouma and Kepa Arrizabalaga to restore parity, before Kai Havertz put Chelsea back in front.

Southampton came again, however, and earned a deserved point in injury time through Jannik Vestergaard’s header.

Premier League legend Alan Shearer said: ‘There’s been too many individual errors [from Chelsea].

‘Once Southampton got the belief, they were in the game. They got further up the pitch and then there was that error from Zouma and the goalkeeper.

‘Frank must have been a nervous wreck every time the ball went near the defence. Southampton deserved a point.’
