Mesut Ozil has sent a pointed birthday message to Arsene Wenger thanking him for his ‘trust’ less than 24 hours after he accused Arsenal of demonstrating a lack of loyalty towards him.

The former Real Madrid superstar enjoyed the most productive years of his Arsenal career under the legendary Frenchman, playing a key role in three FA Cup triumphs between 2014 and 2017.

Ozil has lost his way, however, since Wenger departed the north London club two-and-a-half year ago, failing to convince either Unai Emery or Mikel Arteta he was worthy of being a central part of their plans.

The 32-year-old’s career sunk to a new low on Thursday when it was confirmed he would not be part of Arteta’s 25-man Premier League squad and now appears to have played his last match for the club with just six months remaining on his £350,000-a-week contract.

Wenger, speaking in conjunction with the launch of his new autobiography ‘My Life in Red and White’, last week outlined his sadness at Ozil’s demise and claimed his talent is being ‘wasted’.

With Wenger turning 71 on Thursday, Ozil chose to mark the occasion by sending his former manager a message on Twitter, thanking him for his unwavering support and trust.

He wrote: ‘Happy birthday boss! Thanks for all your trust and support you’ve given me from my 1st until your last day @Arsenal FC. Without a doubt one of the greatest managers in the Premier League history – always respectful, fair & honest. Wishing you all the best!’

Arteta, meanwhile, spoke about his decision to axe Ozil ahead of tonight’s opening Europa League group stage match against Rapid Vienna and was adamant that his lack of involvement was solely down to football reasons.

He said: ‘My conscious is very calm because I have been very fair with him, my level of communication with him has been very high. I have to say that I try to look everybody in the eye and be comfortable with it.

‘With Mesut I have this feeling because I was being very straightforward since I arrived at this club. It is nothing related to any behaviour or pay cuts. It is not true. It’s my decision.’
