Mesut Ozil and his representatives were not surprised at being left out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad but he remains determined to keep training hard and be ready when called upon.

The German World Cup winner has been frozen out by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta and hasn’t featured since football’s return in July.

The Europa League represented an opportunity for him to stake his claims to return to the fold, having not featured since March, but Arteta has elected to leave him out of the squad entirely.

Arsenal were hoping to offload Ozil – the club’s top earner on £350,000-a-week – this summer but a suitable offer never arrived and he has publicly stated his desire to see out the end of his contract.

While Ozil has been a part of first-team training this week, the former Real Madrid man looks set for an extended spell without any gametime.

However, according to The Athletic, his stance hasn’t changed.

He intends to remain at training and be ready to play if he is called upon.

It was not totally unexpected for the German playmaker that he would be left out.

Once it became apparent there were too many non-homegrown players in the Arsenal squad, he feared he faced the chop.

He could face the same fate in Arsenal’s Premier League squad, should the Gunners fail to offload some players before the domestic transfer window shuts.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos, William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli were the other players left out of the squad.

Martinelli is out of action until the New Year due to injury, while Saliba could complete a domestic loan move away.
