Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal need to be patient with Thomas Partey after the Gunners’ new midfielder was only named as a substitute against Manchester City.

Partey completed his £45 million move from Atletico Madrid on deadline day and many were expecting him to win a place straight away in Arteta’s midfield.

However, the Arsenal boss opted for a midfield pairing of Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos for their trip to the Etihad Stadium.

When asked why Partey was not handed an immediate start, Arteta told Sky Sports: ‘Obviously we were tempted but he had a day and a half of training, a lot of new things establishing here.

‘We need to be a little bit patient and respect some timings as well.’

Elsewhere, Kieran Tierney starts in defence despite being initially told to self-isolate for 14 days after his Scotland teammate, Stuart Armstrong, tested positive for coronavirus during the international break.

Tierney was expected to miss Arsenal’s clash against City but the Gunners obtained permission from the Premier League after disputing that Tierney had not come into close proximity with Armstrong.

‘The doc and the club dealt with it,’ said Arteta.

‘We had permission from the Premier League and that was all.’

Meanwhile, Manchester City have welcomed back Sergio Aguero, who makes his first start since suffering a knee injury in June.
