Mesut Ozil and Sokratis Papastathopoulos will only be able to feature in one game before the January transfer window after Mikel Arteta left them out of Arsenal’s Premier League squad.

Already ditched from the Europa League squad, the pair are now only eligible to play in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester City before the transfer window re-opens.

Given their inevitable lack of match fitness by that stage, it seems unlikely they will even be afforded the opportunity to play in that match.

Arsenal currently have 19 non-homegrown players over the age of 21, which is two more than the limit set by Uefa and the Premier League.

After failing to trim their squad sufficiently, it meant two players would have to sit on the sidelines.

Rather than split up four players who could represent the club in only one of the two competitions, Arteta has decided to cut Ozil and Sokratis completely out of his plans.

Ozil, 32, has not played for the club since March despite picking up £350,000-a-week.

He is Arsenal’s highest earner and refused to leave despite his continued exile.

Although he is far from Arteta’s plans, Ozil has publicly stated he will not leave before his contract expires at the end of this season.

However, his lack of playing time over the next few months could convince him to force through a move in January.
