Alan Shearer has named two Arsenal players in his Premier League team of the week after their impressive 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Shearer, the former Newcastle, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers striker, was hugely impressed by the Gunners as they won at Old Trafford for the first time since 2006.

He branded the performance of Thomas Partey as ‘magnificent’, while he thinks both he and Gabriel Magalhaes look to be ‘impressive’ signings.

‘Partey was magnificent and looks to be developing a great partnership with Mohamed Elneny,’ Shearer told the Premier League. ‘He could prove to be a brilliant signing.

On Gabriel, he added: ‘[He] kept Manchester United’s twin threat of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood very quiet on a memorable afternoon for Arsenal. Another impressive signing.’

There was also room for Liverpool debutant Nat Phillips, who impressed at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

‘Thrown in at the deep end due to Liverpool’s defensive crisis, he had a great debut,’ said Shearer.

‘Phillips did everything he had to do very well on a day he will never forget.’

Hakim Ziyech also impressed the Premier League’s top goalscorer in what was his first start in the top flight of English football.

‘It was his first PL start and he didn’t disappoint,’ Shearer said of the former Ajax playmaker. ‘Full of running and he also weighed in with a goal and an assist.’

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was picked between the sticks, with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and Wolves star Rayan Ait-Nouri joining Gabriel and Philiips in Shearer’s back-four.

James Ward-Prowse – the Southampton midfielder who scored two free-kicks against Aston Villa – and Leicester’s Youri Tielmans were selected alongside Partey in a midfield three.

Tielmans’ team-mate Jamie Vardy was one part of an impressive front three alongside Ziyech and Newcastle goalscorer Callum Wilson.
