Arsenal owners Kroenke Sports & Entertainment are prepared to invest in strengthening the team still further and high-level discussions are already underway with a view to launching a bid for Dominik Szoboszlai.

Mikel Arteta was able to bolster his squad in the summer with the additions of Thomas Partey, Willian and Gabriel Magalhaes, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract standoff came to a positive conclusion after the club captain signed a new, lucrative long-term deal.

Despite the additions, Arsenal have made a mediocre start to the new Premier League campaign, losing four of their eight matches so far. And while Arteta has, to a degree, helped solidify a notoriously porous defence, it has come at the cost of his side’s attacking play.

The Gunners have managed just nine goals so far and have a negative goal difference following the 3-0 thumping they received at the hands of Aston Villa prior to the international break.

Arteta attempted to sign Lyon’s Houssem Aouar during the close season but Arsenal were unable to agree a fee with their Ligue 1 counterparts.

Adding some creativity to his midfield remains a priority for Arteta and the club, according to The Athletic, are now considering a move for Szoboszlai who would represent a considerably cheaper option given the €25million release clause in his RB Salzburg contract.

Arsenal are likely to face stiff competition for the Hungary international with both RB Leipzig and Real Madrid monitoring his situation and his current manager, Jesse Marsch, admitted this week the 21-year-old playmaker is likely to move on in January.

‘Yes, the reality is that a guy like Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to have many suitors this winter,’ said Marsch.

‘He’s an incredible talent, and I say this: When you coach young players, you have to love them and love the fact that they’re going to move on and love that they’re going to have big opportunities to prove themselves and show how good they are.

‘If you’re only worried about how it affects your success, then you’re not really going to ever be effective at coaching and leading young people.

‘So with a guy like Dominik, I mean, I want him to show everyone in the world how good he is. So let’s see what happens, but I would be surprised if he winds up staying past winter. ‘We play with teenagers, and of course when they do well a lot of clubs get really excited.’
