Jamie Redknapp says Arsenal’s summer signing Gabriel ‘looks like the real deal’ after his dominant display in Sunday’s 1-0 win against Manchester United.

The Gunners beat the Red Devils at Old Trafford in the league for the first time in 14 years courtesy of a penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Gabriel – who has impressed since making the £27million move from Lille back in the summer – put in another solid performance in the middle of Arsenal’s back three against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Brazilian was booked in the first half for a foul on Marcus Rashford and had to tread carefully for the rest of the match.

Arsenal fans would have had their hearts in their mouths when Gabriel slid in to tackle Nemanja Matic in the box late on, but the centre-back got enough of the ball not to warrant a penalty being given against his side.

And Redknapp reserved special praise for the 22-year-old, highlighting his tenacity and aggressiveness.

‘He’s a leader and the way that he wants to play, and to press high up the pitch, he loves to do that,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports after the game.

‘He loves to win challenges, he got booked early in the game, but I think he still kept his composure, made good tackles and I like the way that he’s aggressive.

‘He wants to win the ball, he’s composed as well. He looks like the real deal.

‘Again, it’s an area where Arsenal have had a lot of problems over the years, trying to find that defender, someone who can do the dirty work, someone who can make this sort of stuff look easy.

‘So, I was very, very impressed with him today.’
