Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged Mikel Arteta to sign a creative midfielder to play alongside Thomas Partey at the Emirates.

The Ghanaian has impressed since joining the Gunners in a £45million deal from Atletico Madrid on deadline day in October.

However, though Partey is more than capable of bursting forward, he’s better as a box-to-box midfielder and the Gunners have lacked a creative spark so far this term.

That was shown during Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Leeds United, which marked the fourth game in a row that Arsenal have failed to score from open play in the Premier League.

Speaking after Arsenal’s draw with Leeds, Wright insisted a creative midfielder alongside Partey would help the goal-shy Gunners.

‘There’s still a lot of work to do,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.

‘When you look at the team [Granit] Xhaka with [Dani] Ceballos…the distance between them and the front players [is too big]. Joe Willock couldn’t get into game.

‘We saw Nicolas Pepe and the game he had, Bukayo Saka came on and was our most dangerous player but there’s a lot of work to be done.

‘We haven’t got that creative guy in midfield alongside Thomas Partey to get us up the field and to get chances made.

‘At the moment it seems like there wasn’t a gameplan today. How we were going to progress once we won the ball to get it to Aubameyang to nick a goal.’

Arsenal take on Molde in Norway on Thursday in the Europa League before hosting Wolves at the Emirates on Sunday.

Partey missed Sunday’s draw at Elland Road after injuring his thigh in a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break.

Arteta hopes to have the midfielder back by the weekend.
