Paul Merson names the Big Six team who doesn’t need Thomas Partey

Paul Merson believes Thomas Partey could play for ‘anyone’ but thinks Chelsea are the only elite side who don’t need the Arsenal midfielder.

Merson, the former Arsenal and Aston Villa playmaker, is a big admirer of the Ghana international and previously hailed him as the ‘number one’ signing of the summer.

He was left surprised that Partey moved to the Emirates and questioned why no other big teams were in for him.

Partey, in Merson’s opinion, would be a considerable upgrade on Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City’s midfield options and is an ‘absolute steal’ for the Gunners at £45million.

And the only team he thinks wouldn’t really benefit from signing Partey are Chelsea – because they already have N’Golo Kante.

‘They’ve got that player now – where before you looked and thought, “Not good enough” in midfield with [Granit] Xhaka and whoever it might be playing with him,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘They haven’t got that pass and they play deep and there’s nothing – it’s just workmanlike.

‘Now, he [Partey] can get… I couldn’t talk highly enough of him.

‘I’m watching the game – when he got bought I was doing Transfer Deadline Day and I heard Partey was going to Arsenal for £45m and I was like, “am I missing a trick here?”

‘He could play for anyone. Anyone.

‘I look at Manchester City, I look at Manchester United, I look at Liverpool, I look at Chelsea – maybe not Chelsea because they’ve got Kante. You probably don’t want two players like that in there.

‘But I can’t talk highly enough of him. I think it’s an absolute steal for Arsenal.

‘I just think it’s a shame Ozil can’t play. I think he opens up the space for Ozil in the team.’
