RB Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch says he would be ‘surprised’ if Arsenal target Dominik Szoboszlai remains at the Austrian club beyond the January transfer window.

The Hungary international has been on fire for club and country this season, with his outstanding individual goal last week securing his country’s qualification to next summer’s European Championship.

Szoboszlai is believed to be available for just £22.5million, and the Gunners are among the clubs linked with the versatile midfielder.

After missing out on Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar back in the summer, Mikel Arteta is still keen on adding a creative spark to his midfield.

But Salzburg’s sister club, RB Leipzig, are reportedly leading the race for Szoboszlai’s signature.

Given his fantastic recent form, Marsch suggested it is likely that the talented 20-year-old will depart in the winter transfer window.

When asked if he’s expecting to lose key players in January, the American boss told the Fútbol with Grant Wahl podcast: ‘Yes. The reality is that a guy like Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to have many suitors this winter.

‘He’s an incredible talent, and I say this: When you coach young players, you have to love them and love the fact that they’re going to move on and love that they’re going to have big opportunities to prove themselves and show how good they are.

‘If you’re only worried about how it affects your success, then you’re not really going to ever be effective at coaching and leading young people.

‘So with a guy like Dominik, I mean, I want him to show everyone in the world how good he is.

‘So let’s see what happens, but I would be surprised if he winds up staying past winter.

‘We play with teenagers, and of course when they do well a lot of clubs get really excited.’
