Alan Shearer believes Frank Lampard’s ‘big decision’ to start Tammy Abraham over Olivier Giroud worked wonders in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over West Ham and says the England striker has earned the right to keep his place for the side’s next clash with Arsenal.

Giroud has been in a rich vein of form in recent weeks and had started Chelsea’s previous Premier League matches before Monday’s London derby but Abraham came in and proved a point with a quickfire second-half brace at Stamford Bridge after Thiago Silva’s early header.

It took Abraham’s personal tally to five goals for the top-flight campaign and the 23-year-old forward will be bursting with confidence ahead of the Blues’ trip to the Emirates on Boxing Day.

Asked whether Abraham should start versus the Gunners, Shearer told Premier League Productions: ‘He has to.

‘When you’re a striker, to have scored two when the manager is practically begging you to that because he’s putting you in and you’ve got to go and prove a point, you can’t then leave him out for the next game when he’s full of confidence.

‘He’ll want the game tomorrow, four days will be too long for Tammy Abraham now because of how he’s feeling.’

The legendary ex-England and Newcastle United striker added: ‘It was a big decision and the decision has worked really well for Frank and for Tammy because when you’re given the opportunity again to go in, bearing in mind how big Giroud in terms of a personality, what he’s done in his career and what he can do.

‘So when you’re given another opportunity, you’ve got to go in there, you’ve got to make a point.

‘There’s no better way of making that point than putting the ball in the back of the net.

‘And doing it twice, as he has done, confidence-wise, that’ll do him the world of good.’

Shearer praised Abraham’s attitude and endless desire to work on his game and claimed the England attacker had responded brilliantly to advice he had given him in the past.

‘I’ve highlighted a couple of things where I think he can improve and he’s been very positive in terms of his feedback,’ Shearer continued.

‘Whereas some players might get the hump of get angry with it, he said, “No. If I don’t do it, it won’t be for a lack of want and trying”, and I like that in someone and that makes you want them to do well.

‘So every time he plays, I’m looking at those things I’ve tried to point out to try to help him and gambling and attacking that space was one of those things tonight.

‘The number of goals and chances he will get if he’s prepared to do that and get better at that will be amazing.’
