Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been handed a $10,000 fine by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after his social media posts on international duty with Gabon were deemed ‘offensive and degrading’ by the governing body.

The Arsenal captain published a string of Instagram Stories last month when he and his Gabon teammates were stuck in Gambia’s Banjul International Airport for six hours ahead of an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gambia.

People were sleeping on the floor of the airport as they waited for Covid results to be processed and when they eventually left, had just 10 hours before the match.

One post from Aubameyang, at 2.31am local time read:’ Since 11.30pm. Still waiting in Gambia and we play tomorrow at 4pm.’

The Gunners skipper also directly criticised the CAF, writing: ‘Nice job CAF, it’s as if we were back in the 1990s.

‘This will not demotivate us but people need to know and CAF need to take responsibility. [It is] 2020 and we want Africa to grow but this is not how we will get there.’

The CAF have taken a dim view of these posts, claiming that they ‘undermined the honour and image’ of African football and fined Aubameyang after he ‘publicly published offensive and degrading material’.

The CAF did admit that Gambia were in the wrong, though, fining the Gambian FA $100,000.

A statement read: ‘The Gambian federation did not comply to the loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship values and rules of fair play concerning the reception of the Gabonese delegation.’
