Arsenal were reduced to 10 men against Burnley on the hour-mark when Granit Xhaka was shown a straight red card for foolishly grabbing Ashley Westwood by the throat.

The Gunners came into the game knowing that nothing but a win would do given the club’s awful start to the campaign – which is their worst in Premier League history.

Xhaka was originally shown a yellow card by the referee for a scuffle with the Burnley players but he was shown a red card after a VAR review showed he grabbed Westwood by the throat.

The Switzerland international has gone someway to repairing his relationship with supporters since he told them to ‘f**k off’ as they booed him during a game against Crystal Palace at the start of last season but fans quickly turned on him this afternoon as he made a difficult situation at the club that bit worse by being sent off.

Just 15 minutes after Xhaka’s red card, Arsenal found themselves behind as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headed into his own net from a corner.

The goal only served to increase the pressure on Xhaka, who scuppered a bright start to the second half.

Arsenal pushed for a equaliser in the dying stages but it was to no avail, meaning the pressure is likely to mount on Arteta in the coming days.
