Arsenal have reportedly joined the race for Real Madrid attacking midfielder Isco, who is looking for an escape route out of the Bernabeu in the January transfer window.

Isco, currently in his eighth year with the Spanish champions, has dropped down the pecking order under Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane and made just three starts in La Liga this term.

The out-of-favour 28-year-old, who joined Madrid for a fee of €30million (£27m) back in 2013, has decided it’s time to seek a fresh challenge and is keen to join a club where he would be guaranteed regular first-team minutes.

According to Sport, Arsenal have joined the list of teams from across Europe eyeing a move for Isco this winter, with Juventus, Sevilla, AC Milan and Everton also interested in the Spain international.

The report claims the Gunners have identified Isco as a possible option after their dismal start to the Premier League campaign, with Mikel Arteta’s side languishing down in 15th place.

Arsenal have placed Isco on a shortlist of possible alternatives to Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, who remains their priority target after they missed out on his signature in the summer.

And while Madrid are in no rush to part with the former Malaga and Valencia star, the prospect of removing his €6.7m-a-season salary from the wage bill is hugely appealing.

Speaking at the Arsenal fans’ forum earlier this week, the club’s technical director, Edu, admitted Arteta’s team was crying out for a creative player with the ability to unlock their attacking options.

‘It’s quite clear what we need,’ Edu said.

‘We need a player with creativity in the middle, we don’t have that in the squad right now.’
