Mikel Arteta’s decision to overlook Willian’s unauthorised trip to Dubai has irked the Arsenal squad, who feel the Spaniard hasn’t applied the same standards he’s promised to keep with the Brazilian as he has with other members of the squad.

Willian joined the club on a three-year deal in the summer, after allowing his contract to run down at rivals Chelsea.

The Brazilian has failed to show the form at Arsenal that earned him a move to the Gunners and he’s yet to open his account for the club.

The slow disintegration of Arteta’s reign has been embodied by the Spaniard’s persistence with out-of-form players and Willian has encapsulated that in recent months.

Many felt Willian should have been dropped before he started the 1-1 draw against Southampton on the bench and Arteta was under increasing pressure before a draw at Elland Road to discipline Willian.

The 32-year-old took an unauthorised trip to Dubai in the international break and many members of the squad expected Arteta to discipline Willian by leaving him out of the team to face Leeds.

Arteta has taken a no-nonsense approach to many elements of life at the Emirates, as shown with his treatment of Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi.

However, the Athletic claim there was much surprise that Willian was selected to start at Elland Road and the decision has sowed some pockets of division in the squad, who feel Arteta’s disciplinary actions are inconsistent.

Arsenal’s draw against Southampton leaves the Gunners in 15th after 13 matches played.

Gabriel’s sending off means the Brazilian will miss Saturday’s trip to Everton, though Hector Bellerin returns from a one-match suspension.
