Arsenal legend David Seaman believes Mikel Arteta deserves further backing from the club’s board, despite the club’s dismal run of results.

The Gunners prevented a fifth straight defeat at home with a 1-1 draw against Southampton at the Emirates on Wednesday.

However, the point has done little to improve the short-term outlook for the club, who are in 15th place and travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton on the weekend.

‘We all know how good Arsenal can be,’ Seaman told TalkSPORT.

The way they play, the one-touch, two-touch, that’s what they’re known for. The little hidden passes between defenders [and so on] but at the moment it’s not happening and it’s [because of] a massive lack of confidence.

‘Hopefully last night’s result will push them on a little bit because to be honest it can’t get much worse. I see him [Arteta] on the sidelines, I see him speaking and I know people at the training ground who tell me his coaching techniques are fantastic.

‘What I would say is a lot of that team was under Arsene Wenger and under Emery so he hasn’t got his own team yet.

‘The club need to back him on that. We can all see we need players. We got Gabriel and alright he was stupid last night kicking the ball away – he looked uncomfortable all game to be honest.

‘We have Partey but we need to add to that. We need to get Pepe back in and playing with confidence.’

Gabriel’s sending off means he’ll miss Saturday’s trip to Everton, who recorded a morale-boosting 2-0 win against Leicester on Wednesday.

Xhaka will also miss the trip as he’s serving the second of a three-match ban, though Hector Bellerin will return after serving a one-match suspension.
