Emmanuel Petit says he has had to ‘detach’ himself from Arsenal in order to feel less ‘angry’ about their situation as he took aim at his former side after their 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Petit has grown ‘indifferent’ to the Gunners after growing frustrated with ‘bad management’ while he believes there is a lack of ‘character’ in the squad.

Mikel Arteta’s side did fight back from a goal down to draw with high-flying Southampton but were forced to hang on after Gabriel Magalhaes’ red card midway through the second half.

The draw did bring a halt to a run of four straight defeats suffered at the Emirates but Petit thinks there can be little joy taken from the current situation.

And the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder admitted he was trying to distance himself from them in order to stop ‘losing his head’.

‘They [Arsenal] are one of the clubs of my heart along with Monaco,’ the former France international told RMC Sport.

‘But it has been a few years now where the anger I had has given way to indifference.

‘It’s ok, it is simply the logical response to what has been happening for years now with bad management from the board and bad choices during the transfer periods.

‘More than that, it is the content and image portrayed by this team in terms of personality and character.

‘I try my hardest to detach myself from everything as much as possible to avoid losing my head over it.’
