Fenerbahce claim to be confident in signing Mesut Ozil in January as Arsenal look to get him off their books and trim his enormous salary from their wage bill.

Ozil is in the last year of his contract at the Emirates and will not be an Arsenal player by next season, but he now looks likely to be leaving in January rather than the summer.

The 32-year-old has been left out of the Gunners’ Premier League and Europa League squads, meaning his only hope of selection is in the EFL Cup quarter-final against Manchester City this month, but that seems unlikely.

Given he is earning £350,000-a-week to do absolutely nothing, Arsenal are keen to see him leave in the next transfer window and it seems that Fenerbahce are ready to do a deal.

Fenerbahce’s club congress member Murat Zorlu told Sport Digitale, via the Sun: ‘A source, who’s very well connected to the club has told me that Mesut Ozil is likely to become a Fenerbahce player during the next transfer window.

‘I would say 90 per cent he will join us in one month.’

It is not clear whether that would be a loan move for the rest of the current season, with the view to make it permanent in the summer, or if Arsenal have finally come to an agreement with Ozil to end his contract.

The Gunners would certainly not be looking for a substantial fee for the German, but his enormous wages have always been the problem as they look to move him on.

Ozil has long been linked with a move to a Turkish side, with family roots in the country and being friendly with President Erdogan.

More importantly, though, could be that his wife, Amine Gulsa, is Turkish and is reportedly keen on a return to the country.

Ozil was reported to turn down a move to Fenerbahce in the summer, but the influence of his wife could have swayed his decision by January.
