‘How can that be right?’ – Tim Sherwood takes aim at Arsenal flop after Tottenham Hotspur defeat

Tim Sherwood questioned Arsenal’s recruitment and took aim at record signing Nicolas Pepe after their 2-0 defeat in the north London derby to Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Spurs midfielder and manager felt people were getting ahead of themselves when praising Mikel Arteta’s side after winning the FA Cup and Community Shield during the summer and believes his gameplan is flawed when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not firing.

But the recruitment at the Emirates is a greater cause for concern, in Sherwood’s opinion.

He feels the ‘philosophy’ of the club is desperately in need of change and feels the £72million signing of Pepe – who was suspended for the clash with Spurs – highlighted their problems in that department.

Sherwood is convinced academy star Bukayo Saka is already better than the 25-year-old, who was signed from Lille, and senses they have wasted money on the winger.

‘I just think, with Arsenal it’s the same Arsenal, same Arteta who won the FA Cup, won the Community Shield against Liverpool,’ he told Premier League Productions.

‘All the Arsenal fans were singing his praises, all the pundits singing his praises. I was looking at his squad thinking, “Calm down a minute”.

‘You’re reliant on one guy, Aubameyang, to score the goals. That is your whole game plan.

‘You sit in, get the ball to Aubameyang – who was absolutely on fire, who was scoring goals after goals after goals – and they were keeping clean sheets because he made them a little bit tighter.

‘Now, he has to find a different way. Aubameyang has scored two goals all season. Only the bottom three have scored less goals than Arsenal.

‘It’s impossible for that to be the case. Yes, their recruitment has been bad but it was bad under Unai Emery as well and Unai Emery took them to a Europa League final.

‘So I’m not sure we can keep changing managers, we need to change the structure, the philosophy of the football club and that starts with your manager and your sporting director working hand in hand to try and recruit better players.

‘They spent £75million – a record signing – on Pepe when they had the boy Saka coming through the academy, who is a better player than him.
