Ian Wright has admitted he was ‘devastated’ when Arsenal sold goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez back in the summer.

The Argentine had been at the club for a decade and finally got his shot when Bernd Leno was injured at the back end of last season.

Martinez’s imperious form helped fire the Gunners to FA Cup glory. but it wasn’t enough to guarantee him a starting berth upon Leno’s return.

In search of more regular playing time, the 28-year-old joined Aston Villa and has hit the ground running. Martinez kept his fifth clean sheet of the season in Villa’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

And speaking on Match of the Day, Arsenal legend Wright revealed how gutted he was to see the goalkeeper leave the Emirates.

‘Four of their five away games they’ve won that’s fantastic form, he’s the reason why,’ Wright said.

‘I was devastated to see him leave Arsenal but he wants to be the Argentinian No.1.

‘When you look at what he’s done for Villa up until this point he’s got five clean sheets, he’s just a very, very good goalkeeper.’

The Gunners, meanwhile, are languishing down in 15th place after losing six of their opening 11 Premier League matches this season.

With the pressure piling on Mikel Arteta, the Spanish boss will be desperate for all three points when his side host Burnley at the Emirates on Sunday evening.
