SkySports pundit Jamie Carragher tore into Arsenal’s recruitment policy by accusing the club of making ‘joke’ signings.

The pressure is building on Mikel Arteta after the Gunners’ worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.

Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Spurs leaves Arsenal on 13 points after 11 matches this term and the club have scored just twice from open play in their last eight fixtures.

Arsenal’s recruitment since Arsene Wenger’s departure in 2018 has been heavily criticised and the club’s relationship with super agent Kia Joorabchian has come under increasing scrutiny.

The likes of Willian, Cedric Soares and David Luiz are all Joorabchian clients and Carragher believes those ‘joke’ signings are holding Arteta back.

‘I think Mikel Arteta is a manager, for me, there might be talk about him being under pressure now but the situation he’s in, I wouldn’t even think about Mikel Arteta’s position,’ Carragher told Monday Night Football.

‘I really like Mikel Arteta. There’s a lot of nonsense around the club – bringing players, buying players.

‘I think some signings were a joke. In terms or bringing Willian in, Luiz in, Cedric in.

‘Is Kia Joorabchian making signings at the club?

‘Mikel Arteta has brought in Thomas Partey and Gabriel. They look like Arsenal’s two best players at this moment, certainly early stages this season.

‘They’ve had four managers and three CEOs since 2018. Just stick with Arteta. But there’s going to be a lot of pain for Arsenal.’
