Jens Lehmann has slammed Arsenal’s ‘unacceptable’ start to the Premier League season under Mikel Arteta and says the club’s players ‘have problems coping with the pressure’.

The Gunners are only 15th in the Premier League table ahead of Sunday’s clash with fellow strugglers Burnley, having lost more than half of their matches this season.

Arsenal are already 11 points off joint-leaders Tottenham and Liverpool and eight points outside the Champions League places.

‘The position right now is the worst in decades. For a club like Arsenal that is not acceptable,’ former Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann told MailSport.

‘All of us old players would try to help and make the Arsenal brand strong and big. We are very disappointed because the brand name is deteriorating, and you simply cannot let that happen.’

Asked who is to blame for Arsenal’s poor form, Lehmann added: ‘Well it is a bit of a mixture.

‘The board has to make the right decisions, the manager has to make the right decisions by signing players and coaching them.

‘The players are in a fantastic environment, they are in London at one of the most traditional clubs.

‘It seems that some of them are still having problems to cope with the pressure because everybody expects them to win something.

‘But we are not even talking about winning anymore when you speak of Arsenal. There are a lot of problems.’

Despite Arsenal’s recent struggles, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson expects the Gunners to defeat Burnley this weekend.

He told BBC Sport: ‘The problems seem to be stacking up for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta at the moment.

‘The more games his side lose, and the longer they continue to struggle to create chances, the more people are going to ask why Mesut Ozil is not in the Gunners team – he will be eligible to play in the Premier League again in January.

‘Since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed his new contract, his form has been indifferent, although you could say that he has been stuck out on the left wing rather than playing as a centre-forward so what are people expecting from him?

‘I would still back Arsenal to beat Burnley, but what Arteta really needs is a good performance from his team too.

‘Some of them are coasting at the moment and they are not earning their corn. That is not something you could ever accuse any Burnley players of.

‘They are in the bottom three at the moment but I am expecting them to gradually climb away from trouble, partly because of their willingness to scrap.’
