Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has dismissed reports suggesting the Gunners are ready to sell record signing Nicolas Pepe and says he has a ‘big future’ at the Emirates.

Much was expected of Ivory Coast international Pepe after Arsenal spent a club-record £72million to sign him from Lille in the summer of 2019.

Pepe only scored eight goals in 42 appearances last season, however, and has endured a turbulent start to the 2020-21 campaign.

While the 25-year-old scored in Arsenal’s recent Europa League victory over Molde, that was just his fourth goal from 16 matches and he was sent off for violent conduct in his last Premier League match.

Recent reports say Arsenal will consider selling Pepe if a suitable offer arrives, with the club’s hierarchy reportedly convinced they spent too much on his 2019 transfer.

But Campbell insists Arsenal did not make a mistake by signing the Ivorian and says he can have a ‘big future’ under Mikel Arteta.

‘I don’t think they made an error in his signing, not at all,’ Campbell, who made 228 appearances for Arsenal, told Football Insider.

‘Mikel Arteta wants to work with him. I think he has a big future at the club because he is a very talented player.

‘He has done some things that were not quite right, one of them being the sending off at Leeds.

‘He is suffering right now because he cannot help the team in the Premier League but he will come back better.

‘With a bit of luck, everything will be fine when he does return.’
