Lucas Torreira’s agent has played down suggestions the Arsenal midfielder will return early from his loan stay with Atletico Madrid ahead of a potential January transfer.

The Uruguayan moved to the Spanish capital on loan on deadline day but, after impressing early on, has struggled for game time since testing positive for coronavirus in November.

He has made just a handful of cameo appearances since then and it has been suggested his loan could be terminated in the upcoming window, with Arsenal reportedly working on a deal to transfer him permanently to Serie A side Torino.

But Torreira’s agent, Pablo Betancur, says he is happy at Atletico despite his lack of recent game time under Diego Simeone, quashing talk of an early exit.

Speaking to GianlucaDiMarzio.com, Betancur said of the rumours: ‘Lucas is calm and happy and has nothing in his mind beyond continuing with Atletico.

‘He is finishing his process of adaptation [to the team and La Liga].’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta also addressed the rumours that Torreira could leave Atletico next month, appearing to suggest that talks have taken place regarding his future.

‘Edu has been dealing with that situation, but again, when the market opens and we have the possibility to bring players in and get players out, whatever we have to do, we will discuss it,’ said the Spaniard.

Asked directly if that meant Torreira is heading back to Arsenal in January, Arteta replied: ‘I cannot comment on that at the moment.’

Torreira has played just 14 minutes of football in the last month and Atletico are believed to be having second thoughts about the midfielder, who has not lived up to their expectations.

Terminating the loan early could suit all parties, with Atletico getting Torreira off their wage bill, Arsenal receiving a fee in January they can reinvest and the player himself securing a return to Italy with Torino, where he shone playing for Sampdoria.
