Mesut Ozil keen to remain at Arsenal beyond January transfer window, says midfielder’s agent

Mesut Ozil’s agent has revealed that the midfielder has no plans to leave Arsenal this winter and is intent on seeing out the remainder of his contract in north London.

Under-fire Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta stunned supporters by leaving Ozil out of both his Premier League and Europa League squads for the 2020/21 campaign and the 32-year-old – the club’s top earner on eye-watering wages of £350,000-a-week – looks certain to have played his final match for the Gunners.

Discussing Ozil’s future this week, Arsenal technical director Edu hinted that a financial settlement could be on the cards ahead of the January transfer window, to bring an early end to the German’s time at the Emirates.

However, according to Ozil’s representative, Erkut Sogut, the World Cup-winning playmaker remains totally committed to his current deal.

Asked whether Ozil could be on the move in January, Sogut told TMW: ‘Even one day is a long time in football, you never know.

‘Of course, there are many clubs interested in him.

‘This has never changed but his willingness to honour his contract and play hasn’t changed either.

‘Again, he’s a man of his word, loyal, and loyalty is hard to find in these times.’

Sogut added: ‘It is not an easy situation. He loves the club and the fans are deeply and is deeply sorry that he has not been given a chance this season.

‘Mesut was the player who reached 50 Premier League assists, faster than anyone else, in 141 appearances and Arsenal need exactly this kind of creativity.

‘They say he was sidelined for “football reasons” but that’s not something I can comment on. I think the fans want him back on the pitch and at the last match they also chanted his name.’

Sogut claimed he was never informed about the fact Ozil would be omitted from Arsenal’s squads, a decision which came as a huge ‘surprise’ and hit the ex-Germany international hard.

‘It’s a shame that Mesut isn’t playing,’ he added.

‘Of course, everyone focuses on his salary and I also understand why.

‘But from a personal perspective, I say it’s a waste considering his talent and creativity.

‘I talked to Arsenal a few days before the summer transfer window and I told them about Mesut’s feelings, his desire to stay and how much he loved the club. And they never told me he wouldn’t be in the squad.’

‘It was a surprise to all of us, something that clearly hit him hard.’

Sogut refused to rule out a possible move to Italy in the future but insisted Ozil was still fully focussed on honouring his contract at Arsenal.

‘Maybe one day, why not? Serie A is a great league and I’m sure these teams could benefit from Mesut Ozil’s skills.

‘He’s a pure No.10 and many Italian clubs play with a player in that role.

‘However, I repeat: he is totally concentrating on his training with the club and at home, on charity and his business off the pitch.

‘He is not thinking of other clubs except to the one with which he is now under contract.’
