Mikel Arteta has revealed that Gabriel Martinelli is closing in on a first-team return after suffering no setbacks during his appearance for Arsenal Under-23s this week.

The 19-year-old has been sidelined since June after needing surgery to fix a knee injury.

But the Brazilian managed to complete 45 minutes in Arsenal Under-23s’ 3-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday evening.

Arteta has revealed that Martinelli has trained following his comeback but Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Burnley on Sunday is likely to come too soon for the Brazilian to make his first-team return.

‘Martinelli played his first 45 minutes for a long time,’ Arteta said after Arsenal’s win over Dundalk on Thursday evening.

‘He was good and he came through the game and felt really good. He has trained.’

Arteta also insisted that Eddie Nketiah is in with a chance of starting his second Premier League game of the season after scoring Arsenal’s opener in their 4-2 win against Dundalk/.

‘Since we decided to keep Eddie at the club and not send him on loan, the main reason was we saw his hunger and his ability to score goals consistently,’ said Arteta.

‘He has been doing that since he has been with the first team, he is performing really well, last night [against Dundalk] he was a threat all the time and he has chances, like everyone else, to start the game on Sunday.’
