Mikel Arteta throws lifeline to Mesut Ozil over his Arsenal career

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has suggested Mesut Ozil could resurrect his career at the club as the Spaniard will consider registering the German in his Premier League squad in January.

The playmaker was left out of Arteta’s squad after a decision made in September to leave Ozil out of the Gunners’ 25-man squad.

Ozil hasn’t played a single minute for the Gunners this season but Arsenal have suffered from a lack of creativity all season and they can review their Premier League squad choices in January.

Arsenal are open to listening to offers for Ozil but few clubs can afford his £350,000-a-week wages and there is a growing sense that Arsenal could benefit from his attacking flair before his contract expires at the end of the season.

‘He’s not in the squad right now. I’m focusing just on the players we have here,’ said Arteta.

‘But, whatever happens in January, we have some time to decide.’

Ozil was a regular when Arteta first took charge at Arsenal but he hasn’t featured since football returned following a three-month break last season.

The German had difficulties under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg but the Swede believes Arteta was wrong to exile the midfielder.

‘When you have a player like that – and I don’t say he should play every single week – but when you have possession and you need to find that cute pass, I don’t think there are any better players than Mesut doing that,’ said Ljungberg.

‘Of course you lose a bit defensively, but it’s a decision they’ve made. I don’t know why the decision’s been made and he’s outside the 25-man squad, so they can’t use him. But for those things, I don’t think there are many better in the world.’
