Robin van Persie has revealed that he urged Arsene Wenger to sign Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini for Arsenal.

The Dutchman spent eight years with the Gunners and helped the club win the FA Cup in 2005.

But Arsenal were unable to secure the Premier League title during Van Persie’s time at the club and the former striker, who left to join Manchester United in 2012, believes the team’s defensive weaknesses were to blame.

Van Persie claims that he suggested to Wenger that Chiellini would be the man to fix Arsenal’s issues at the back.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old is currently in his 16th season at Juventus and has helped the club win nine Serie A titles during his time at the club.

‘At one stage I felt I needed to say where things could be improved for Arsenal to become champions,’ Van Persie said in an interview for Kaj Gorgels’ YouTube channel.

‘I played against him [Chiellini] a few times and he is really a winner.

‘You saw that a few weeks ago against the Netherlands national team. He’s 36 years old but gives nine elbows, laughing. He keeps on smiling and doesn’t even get a yellow card.

‘You need those kind of winners, killers, I thought we should sign him.

‘I came up with suggestions and names based on him, my own experiences.

‘We were very good in attack and we scored a lot, but your goalkeeper and your defence are the foundation of your team.’

Van Persie also revealed that he still keeps in contact with Wenger.

‘I still talk to him every now and then,’ said the Dutchman.

‘He is a super intelligent man… professor of mathematics, professor of German, professor of English.

‘Some people think I had a fight with Wenger in my final stages [at Arsenal], but I never had a fight with him. There was never any of that, it was always respectful.
