Arsenal left themselves with a mountain to climb against rivals Tottenham as Mikel Arteta’s side trailed 2-0 at the break.

Heung-Min Son scored a stunning long-range strike in the opening minutes, giving Jose Mourinho’s side the perfect platform to sit back and counter-attack on their north London rivals.

Though Arsenal came back into the match they barely laid a glove on Spurs and the Son-Kane partnership paid dividends again on the stroke of half-time when the England captain was played in by the South Korean to fire past Bernd Leno.

Astonishingly, Arsenal left themselves 5 on 2 as Spurs counter-attacked on Arteta’s side but a closer look shows how the move really developed.

Thomas Partey was a shock selection to start at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, having spent the last month on the sidelines.

He had been projected to be out for a few weeks further but the midfielder was seen on the sidelines asking to be substituted as Spurs broke on an outnumbered Arsenal defence.

Partey did his best to return to the field to help his team-mates but he actually walked back off again as Kane and Son conspired to double Spurs’ lead.

Dani Ceballos was then subbed on to replace Partey and Arsenal fans will fear their Ghanaian midfielder is set for another prolonged period on the sidelines.

Should Spurs hang onto their lead, Arsenal’s worst ever start to the season will be extended.

The Gunners are currently on 10 points having played ten matches and they will slip to sixteenth in the table if Brighton beat Southampton on Monday night.
