Arsenal have agreed to terminate Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ contract with immediate effect, according to reports.

The 32-year-old, who was signed for £17.7 million in 2018, has not featured at all for Arsenal this season after he was frozen out of the first-team squad by Mikel Arteta.

The Greek centre-back was not named in Arsenal’s squads for their Premier League and Europa League campaigns, and his only playing time has been with the club’s Under-21s.

According to Football.London, the Gunners have now reached an agreement with Sokratis to terminate his current deal, which was due to expire at the end of the season.

The defender has attracted interest from Napoli, Genoa, Fenerbahce, Olympiacos and Real Betis, and he would now be free to join a club on a free transfer.

Sokratis leaves having made 69 appearances across two-and-a-half seasons with the Gunners.

Sokratis helped Arsenal win the FA Cup last season and was also part of the squad who were beaten by Chelsea in the Europa League final in 2019.

Speaking earlier this month, Arteta admitted that Sokratis was ‘probably going to leave this window’.

Sokratis also follows Mesut Ozil out of the exit door at Arsenal as the midfielder is on the verge of officially completing his move to Fenerbahce.

The 32-year-old travelled to Turkey at the weekend and is set to be unveiled by his new club.
