Arsenal legend Liam Brady has launched a scathing attack on Mesut Ozil and has given his unequivocal backing to Mikel Arteta’s decision to exile the divisive playmaker.

The Germany World Cup winner featured prominently in the early stages of Arteta’s tenure, starting his former teammate’s first 10 Premier League matches at the helm, but he didn’t play a single minute over the course of ‘Project Restart’ and was left out of Arsenal’s domestic and European squads this season.

Arteta has been adamant that Ozil’s omission is down to football reasons only, and although the clamour for the 32-year-old’s return increased earlier this month following a poor run of results, the former Real Madrid star appears certain to have played his last game for the club.

Teammate Bernd Leno recently insisted Ozil has maintained his professionalism during the most testing period of his turbulent career, but Brady, who worked at the club during Arsene Wenger’s time in charge, revealed the gifted midfielder is not universally popular in the dressing room.

Brady told Keys & Gray: The Podcast: ‘I don’t blame Arteta over Ozil. He gave Ozil plenty of chances and he performed for a couple of months. Ozil just reverted back to type.

‘He’s not a good guy in the dressing room, he’s not a good guy on the pitch. I’ve no problem with Mikel bombing him.

‘(Ivan) Gazidis should have let him go on a free three years ago. We should have spent what we are paying him over three years – around £50million – on a good young player instead of having him around the place.’

The likes of Juventus and Fenerbahce have been linked with a move for Ozil in recent weeks, but despite Arteta’s insistance that several high-profile players will leave in January, the club’s highest-earner appears destined to see out the final six months of his contract.

Arsenal did sanction the departure of Sead Kolasinac on New Year’s Eve, with the Bosnia international left-back rejoining Schalke, initially on loan for the rest of the season.

‘I’m happy and proud to be wearing the royal blue of Schalke 04 once again,’ Kolasinac told the German club’s official website yesterday.

‘The club is currently in a difficult situation. Over the coming weeks and months I want to do my part in order to help us pick up as many points as possible.‘We will manage to stay up together, I’m 100 per cent convinced of it!’
