Mesut Ozil has confirmed he will join Fenerbahce imminently and has been granted permission by Arsenal to travel to Turkey on Sunday night to complete the move.

The World Cup winner – who is Arsenal’s highest earner on £350,000-a-week – has not played for the Gunners since March of last year after being frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta.

For a long time it appeared as though he would see out his contract, which expires in the summer, and leave on a free transfer but Fenerbahce have convinced him to leave north London this month.

Although there are still some details to be ironed out, Ozil has confirmed that his move to Istanbul is now a mere formality and he will travel to Turkey to complete the paperwork.

Speaking to NTV, he said: ‘I am so happy. I’m a Fenerbahce fan. God wanted me to play football in Fenerbahce. I’m proud.

‘I am coming tonight with my family to Istanbul, thank God who gave me the opportunity to represent this club. I will wear the shirt with pride.’

Not long after phoning up the Turkish TV station, Ozil then changed all the branding on his social media accounts to yellow and blue – the colours of Fenerbahce.

Ozil has Turkish roots and even married a former Miss Turkey, with the 32-year-old snubbing lucrative offers from MLS and elsewhere to move to Istanbul.

Arsenal are believed to have forfeited a transfer fee in order to get Ozil off their books with some reports even claiming they will pay some of his salary for the remainder of the season, such has been their desperation to offload him.

Earlier in the day Ozil also appeared to confirm his new Fenerbahce shirt number, with his usual number 10 already taken.

The former Real Madrid and Schalke man tweeting the number 67 alongside a heart emoji, which is a reference to the town of Zonguldak – which has a postcode beginning with 67 – where his grandparents came from before moving to Germany.
