Arsenal are confident Kieran Tierney’s calf strain is not serious and the influential left-back will be in contention to feature on Monday evening against Newcastle.

The former Celtic star was rested as a precaution ahead of last night’s stalemate against Crystal Palace which brought to a halt Arsenal’s four-game winning run.

Mikel Arteta confirmed the player was due to undergo a scan on Friday but The Athletic report that the 23-year-old has not suffered a serious injury and he will be available for selection as early as next week.

Asked whether Arsenal’s game-plan had been impacted by Tierney’s absence, Arteta told Sky Sports: ‘Yeah, he’s a real threat and the way we are playing and the way we attack on that left side, he’s a really important player.

‘But we didn’t have him, he’s injured and we had to find other solutions.’

Pressed on Tierney’s potential availability for Arsenal’s clash with Newcastle, he replied: ‘I don’t know, it depends how he evolves. ‘He’s going to have an MRI scan tomorrow and we’ll see how it is,’

At his post-match press conference, Arteta underlined what a ‘disappointment’ it was to lose Tierney and suggested the severity of the injury would become clearer over the coming days. ‘

We’ll probably know more tomorrow after testing him and having the evolution of the injury and how long he’s going to be out for,’ he said.

‘Certainly it was a big disappointment to lose him and hopefully he can be with us really quickly.’

Asked whether it was a challenge to adapt the side’s attacking play without Tierney, he said: ‘It is a challenge when you created the game-plan for the day and he has to pull out just a few hours before the game.

‘But that’s why we have other players and they have to step in.

‘Kieran’s progression in the last few months has been incredible and now it’s for another player to step in and do what he does.’
