Arsenal’s hopes of signing Stoke City defender Nathan Collins are under threat by Burnley.

The 19-year-old defender is a target for Mikel Arteta, who is keen to find defensive cover given Sokratis’ departure from the Emirates earlier this week.

However, Arsenal had been keen for the teenager to continue with the Potters to continue his development and had planned on making a move in the summer or even possibly 2022.

But Burnley are threatening to scupper Arsenal’s plans as Sean Dyche views the defender as viable replacement for James Tarkowski, who has been heavily linked with an exit from Turf Moor.

Stoke value Collins at around £10m and Burnley have the cash ready to go for the teenager after the Clarets were recently bought by an American consortium.

Though that’s a reasonable fee for the 19-year-old, Arsenal are currently suffering from cashflow problems and they’re desperate to clear some space on their wage bill with Sokratis leaving last week and Mesut Ozil to follow.

The Gunners recently took advantage of a government scheme to take a loan of around £120m and it’s unlikely that they’d sanction a move for Collins without first selling off an asset, according to the Sun.

Manchester United coach Darren Fletcher is said to be pushing Collins’ case at Old Trafford as the Scot spent time at Stoke as a player and was made aware of the defender’s potential.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seeking a ready-made defensive partner for Harry Maguire and he wants a speedy companion for the England centre-back.
