Kevin Campbell believes Arsenal aren’t too far away from being top-four contenders, but sees finishing in the top six as a much more realistic expectation for this season.

The Gunners registered just 14 points from their opening 14 Premier League this term, which is their worst start to a top-flight campaign for an astonishing 46 years.

But Mikel Arteta’s side have been sparked into life in recent weeks, largely owing to the impressive performances of youngsters Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Four wins from their past five Premier League games has seen the north Londoners climb from 15th to 10th in the table.

Arsenal’s mettle will be tested within their next six fixtures, which includes tough clashes against the likes of Southampton, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Gunners hero Campbell is insistent that in order to reach their targets, his former side must reinforce their midfield in the January window.

That midfield addition is edging closer, as Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard on loan until the end of the season.

Despite the topsy-turvy nature of the season, Campbell is backing the Gunners to secure their place in the Europa League with a top-six finish.

‘The league is crazy right now, it’s up and down, there are some crazy results,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

‘I think in the next two or three weeks we’re going to find out how this Arsenal season is going to go. Obviously, we’ve gone from great lows to starting to pick up a bit of momentum.

‘We’ve got clean sheets in the last five games, that part of the team is looking decent and our top goalscorer for the last few seasons [Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang] is starting to hit the back of the net again.

‘If we can revamp that midfield I think we can finish in the top six. The top four isn’t far off.

‘Arsenal could realistically finish in the top six because when you look at it all these wins now have propelled us up the table and we’re only a few points off top six. It’s crazy.

‘We still have to play all of them teams above us. We’ve beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford, we’ve got them coming us soon who’s to say we can’t beat them at the Emirates?

‘But our problem is we haven’t been great at the Emirates and Man United have probably been more effective away from home so we’ve got to pick up our form at home.
