Lukas Podolski has slammed Arsenal for their treatment of Mesut Ozil ahead of his transfer to Fenerbahce.

The former Real Madrid superstar flew to Istanbul last weekend after he came to an agreement with the north London club which effectively saw the last six months of his £350,000-a-week contract ripped up.

Ozil joined the Gunners in the summer of 2013 and linked up with his former Germany international teammate Podolski, and together they won the FA cup in their only full season together, helping end Arsenal’s nine-year trophy drought.

The 32-year-old enjoyed some unquestionable highs throughout his time at the Emiarets, but Podolski, who also plays in Turkey with Antalyaspor, was sad to see Ozil’s Arsenal career fizzle out in the way it did, with Mikel Arteta deeming the World Cup winner surplus to requirement.

‘I generally think with a player who is now in his sixth or seventh year with the club, to kick him completely out of the squad, that’s absolutely not okay,’ he told Sport Bild.

‘He’s shown his class on the pitch, he’s never been negative towards his colleagues or the club. Arsenal as a club have not looked positive in this situation over the last months.

‘I am delighted that Mesut will play for us in Turkey in the future. He is an asset to the league and at 32 years of age is still in his prime footballing age.

‘It happens again and again in the Süper Lig that great player names are presented by the club bosses in order to satisfy the fans.

‘It was really a shame that it ended like this. No professional is satisfied if he is not allowed to play.

‘Now Mesut can finally do what we all love again: play football.’
