Martin Odegaard has wasted no time settling in to life at Arsenal, pulling off an audacious backheel nutmeg assist in training as he pushes for a place in the team against Manchester United.

The Norwegian completed his loan move from Real Madrid to the Emirates earlier this week and will be hoping to make an immediate debut when United come visiting on Saturday.

He has now started training with his new teammates and was seen getting intense one-on-one coaching from Mikel Arteta on Friday, the final session before tomorrow’s huge game.

Arsenal have been crying out for more creativity and flair and Odegaard looks set to provide that, already giving fans a glimpse of what they can expect on the London Colney training pitches.

The players who did not start in the 3-1 victory against Southampton on Tuesday were put through their paces in a mini-match in which Odegaard quickly showed his class.

Wearing an orange bib, the 22-year-old darted ahead of Joe Willock to collect a pass from his old Real teammate Dani Ceballos.

Odegaard took a composed first touch and then backheeled the ball through the legs of Willock to Reiss Nelson, who calmly slotted the ball past another January recruit, Mat Ryan.

The moment of magic from Odegaard was greeted by a whoop from one of his teammates, followed by cheers and even applause from the sidelines.

Arteta was full of praise for Odegaard at his pre-United press conference earlier this week, saying: ‘He’s a player that we followed for some time and we believe that he’s got some special qualities that we need, that we have been missing.

‘Now we have to give him a little bit of time. He hasn’t played that many minutes in Madrid but he’s been training hard and he looks so excited, as we are, to have another big talent at our club.

‘I think in the last few seasons he’s progressed and developed in the right way. I’ve followed him very closely because he played for Real Sociedad, which is my home town. I know him really well.

‘I’ve been really impressed. He’s a such a talent. He needs the right environment, he needs a little bit of time but I think he’s got the qualities to be a success for us.’
