Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi says it was an ‘honour’ to play alongside Mesut Ozil as the German closes in on a move to Fenerbahce.

The playmaker is set to join the Turkish giants in the coming days after agreeing to terminate his Arsenal deal, which has six months to run at the Emirates.

Ozil hasn’t played for the club in over eight months and is the Gunners’ top scorer on £350,000-a-week, which has proved prohibitive for the club’s plans of adding to the squad.

Arteta is slowly offloading unwanted members of his Arsenal squad and Guendouzi was one of those that departed last summer, albeit on a season-long loan to Hertha Berlin.

And the Frenchman was quick to send a message to Ozil today as the German prepares to announce his official departure from the Gunners.

‘Congratulations mi baby ❤️ ,’ wrote Guendouzi.

‘How lucky is Fenerbahce to welcome the no.10 in the history of Mannschaft 😍.

‘It was an honour to play with you and share all those moments on and off the pitch.

‘I wish you the best for this new chapter 💪🏼.

‘I miss you bro ❤️’.

Ozil’s departure will free up significant funds for Arsenal and should allow Arteta more flexibility in the transfer market.

However, any Ozil dividend is likely to come in the summer as opposed to this month as the club are suffering from the financial effect of the pandemic.
