Mesut Ozil and Arsenal have reached an agreement to terminate his contract, reports claim.

The German World Cup winner has found himself in the cold this season and was left out of Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads.

While he had previously stated he wanted to see out the duration of his Arsenal contract, which expires in the summer, he has now agreed to bring it to a premature end.

He was scheduled to earn around £7million between now and the end of the season but a deal has now been agreed for an early termination, according to The Athletic.

He is set to travel to Turkey this weekend to complete a move to Fenerbahce after striking a deal with them.

Ozil was told that he would not be registered for the Arsenal squads for the second half of the season either and therefore he decided the time had come to move on.

He only found out he would not be part of the squads earlier in the season on the day before the summer transfer window shut, which didn’t leave enough time for him to leave.

Fenerbahce have moved quickly this time, however, and have struck an agreement in principle to sign him as a free agent.

Ozil was the highest-paid player in Arsenal history when he penned a three-and-a-half year deal in 2018.

His contract was worth around £350,000-a-week but he has found himself used less and less since Unai Emery and, most recently, Mikel Arteta’s reign.

He hasn’t featured since March, 2020 and the 32-year-old has now decided now is the time to end his seven-year association with the club.

Since joining from Real Madrid in 2013, he has won three FA Cups as well as the Community Shield.
