Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are monitoring Lucas Torreira’s situation ‘very closely’ amid reports that Monaco are the frontrunners to sign him on loan until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at Atletico Madrid but has been used sparingly by Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Valencia, Lazio and Fiorentina have all been credited with an interest in taking Torreira on loan for the rest of the campaign, while recent reports in Spain indicate Ligue 1 side Monaco are leading the chase for his signature.

Gunners technical director Edu has already insisted that if the Uruguay international is unhappy with his precidament, then the north London club could look to terminate his loan spell at Atletico early.

And Arteta has now also admitted the situation isn’t ideal for Arsenal or the player, but doesn’t know whether Torreira’s future will be resolved before the January transfer window closes this coming Monday.

When asked about the Monaco rumours, the Spanish boss said: ‘We have been talking to Lucas, Edu has been very close to the situation.

‘He hasn’t been playing as many minutes as he would like, as we would like, but to be fair the team is doing so well in Spain and it is understandable they don’t change the team so much.

‘We just want to be right behind Lucas, protect him, help him make the right decisions for the future, so let’s see what happens. But we are monitoring the situation very closely.’

When pressed on if his loan spell at Atletico could be cut short, Arteta replied: ‘I don’t know.

‘At the moment he’s going to stay at Atletico, that’s my belief and I don’t know if that is going to change in the next two or three days.’

Arteta was similarly tight-lipped on the future of Shkodran Mustafi, whose contract expires this summer.

When quizzed on reports that the Germany international’s deal could be terminated early, he said: ‘Again, he’s another situation at the moment that is opening and we are having conversations internally with the player and agent. We will see what the right solution is for this one as well.

‘We are monitoring the situation, I cannot say much more than that. We have conversations ongoing and we’ll see what’s the best [decision] at the end of the transfer window.’
